The Poor Among US
Proverbs 21:13

In spite of all our relief and national and international relief programs, the poor are still among us.  The battle of poverty goes on and on.  Most of us, however, are among the prosperous.  What should Christians do regarding the poverty of so many others?

The latest Census Bureau data indicates that one in every ten Americans are considered poor.  Overseas, the conditions are even worse.  “The World Food Council tells us that a third of the children in the world die of malnutrition and disease before they have five birthdays.”   Time Magazine     The Chicago Tribune report states, “each year 100,000 children go blind because of lack of vitamin A in their diets.”

I.  Why do we have the poor?

The Bible seems to say that God allows the poor among us to test our compassion for our fellow men.    Our response to the suffering and inhumanity of others reveals our true Christian spirit.

Some have wrongly assumed that to be poor is a sign of God’s disfavor.  This is not true for God loves the poor and hears their cries.  He sees and judges those who wrong them.  Psalms 14:6.

The Word teaches us that God will bless those who reach out to help the poor.  Psalms 41:1.  On the other hand, we invite God’s judgment if we ignore the needs of the poor.  Proverbs 21:13.  We, as Christians, have a duty and obligation to help those in poverty.

II.  How can we help the poor?

There are many different views of helping the poor.  The Government contends that we should find a way to redistribute wealth and thus wipe out ALL poverty.  The Christian principle suggests that we share.   The Scripture does not indicate that we can or should change the world’s economic structure.  Jesus clearly taught that poverty exists in this present evil world....”ye have the poor with you always,” Mark 14.

Christ’s ministry to the poor was one of genuine compassion.  He would say (on the Sermon on the Mount), “when, not if.”  Christian compassion should be exemplified without glory or fanfare.  Sharing of self demands a realization of the needs to others.

Anyone willing to work was assured of food to feed their family.  The Old Testament story of Ruth and Naomi portrays both women working in the fields to gather gleanings, which was deliberately left for them.  In the New Testament, the duty of giving alms was acknowledged and encouraged.  Jesus often spoke of giving to the poor.

Widows without family support were cared for by the church, as read in Acts 6:1 and I Timothy 5:9, 16.  Paul mentions the poor in Galatians 2:10...”that we should remember the poor.”  Christian congregations have always been God’s channel of mercy to the poor.

III.  Why should we help the poor?

First, the presence of the poor prompts us to exercise compassion.  We are truly selfish and self-centered when we think only of our needs.  I John 3:17

Second, the presence of the poor gives us opportunity to prove that Christ has touched our hearts and made it new.  Old sin nature prompts us to look the other way and ignore the pleads of others.  Compassion is an evidence of an inner work of grace.  James spoke of faith and works.  Our acts are proof of faith.

Third,   the poor give Christians an opportunity to lay up heavenly treasures...Proverbs 19:17 and James 2:15-16.

Fourth,   there is a practical side to helping the poor.  The church is to be a haven for those in its congregation who lack food and housing, who are suffering sickness, financial hardship, lack of clothing and medical care for their children.

Expect a blessing when you help the poor.  Jesus said, “Freely ye have received, freely give.”  Our first obligation is to share the Bread of Life - salvation.  We cannot withhold the Bread of
Sustenance to those with genuine need.

We are commanded to be Good Samaritans.

One of the most effective means for Christians  to shape legislative actions regarding the church, Christian morals, and Godly concerns is through personal contact.  Taking the time to either write, e-mail, call or visit lawmakers will impact decisions that need to be made. .  Lawmakers are servants of the people who elect them.

A recent study by American University officials implied that letters from constituents were the most effective means of communication.  Telephoning the lawmaker was a close second.

What are guidelines for Christians when writing a letter to an elected official?

1.  Be timely.  Write your concerns near voting time.
2.  Be clear and legible.
3.  Stay with one issue or request.
4.  Be courteous
5.  Include your name, address, email address, etc.

What are the guidelines when you meet personally with your elected officials?

1.  Set up an appointment and be prompt.
2.  Plan ahead of time the idea that you want promoted.
3.  Prepare a brief, one page, sheet with your request including the need, the problem, and your idea for the solution.  Leave the info sheet with the official.
4.  Ask your legislator  for help.
5.  Be kind and considerate.

Our state and national leaders impact our lives in many ways by the decisions they make.  Your individual involvement and commitments can make a monumental difference.  Pray for Godly courage and wisdom.  Be active.

The following information (address and correct salutation) will help you with your communication to your elected officials.

Address: Christian Action Commission
         P.O. Box 88
         Mantachie, MS 38855

Service -
During our 2008-2009 Associational year,  your Christian Action Commission has been well represented at the Mississippi State House and at our United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.  It was my distinct honor to share with Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour and  Lt. Governor Phil Bryant about our CAC mission.  I was  privileged again to lead in the opening prayer for the State Senate and our State House.  I have also visited with U.S. Senator Roger Wicker and U.S. Representative Travis Childers regarding our CAC concerns

During this past year, each church was mailed a copy of the “Petition For Initiative Measure To Amend the Mississippi Constitution.”  (Attached) The petition has been well received.  It’s intended purpose is to show the “term person to be defined to include every human being from the moment of fertilization.”   Our churches, along with hundreds of others, have pledge to stand against abortion.  Abortion has been our highlighted focus for the 2008-2009 year.  As of September 2009, there will need to be 90,000  petitions validated before our local circuit clerks.

Once validated, the petitions are sent to the Honorable Delbert Hoseman, Secretary of the State for Mississippi. The 90.000 signed petitions will allow this amendment to be voted on by Mississippi voters.    Thanks to each church, pastor, teacher, and circulator who had a part in this drive.  For further information, you can go to www.personhoodmississippi.com.

Schedule of Yearly Special Interest for CAC:
2006-2007   Religious Freedom
2007-2008   Gambling
2008-2009   Abortion and Prolife
2009-2010   Homosexuality and Gay Rights

Name Change
The Director and Board of Trustees of the Christian Action Commission of the Baptist Missionary Association of Mississippi propose that the Christian Action Committee’s name be changed to Moral Action of Mississippi, an agency of the Baptist Missionary Association of Mississippi.

This is a request by our national agency Moral Action.  Each state or regional association will be asked to name or rename their moral agency such as: the Moral Action of California, the Moral Action of Texas, etc.  This will enhance unification and cohesiveness among our states in the area of morality.  As Executive Director of our national Moral Action agency, I desire to have contacts in every state and region of the BMA.

The Silencing of Christians
America is in a “Valley of Decision” as Joel declared in the Old Testament.  We recognize the desire by Satanic forces to silence the voice of Christ and His Church.

But we that believe in Godly, biblical convictions cannot sit idly by, our voice must be heard.  BMA churches still believe in the home, morality, the Bible, the Church, and the greatness and power of God.

The War is Before us!
The main battlefront today is for our children.  Whoever controls the children, controls our future.  There is an agenda today to guide the children in America from God via television, books, movies, public school mandates, etc.  Such organizations as the ACLU and American Atheists are leading the battle in our courts to remove God from our children in the public schools.

The New Testament church has a mandate and unlimited opportunity to engage our children in the teaching of the word through Sunday School, VBS, Awana, Galileans, GMA’s, church camps and youth groups.

Alan Sears in the book, “The ACLU vs America” states, “the ACLU is defending those who abuse children while attacking those who give them moral guidance.”

The Christian Action Commission continues to promote Biblical morality and to strongly oppose the evils of our time, such as alcohol, child and drug abuse, sodomy, homosexuality, pornography, gambling, abortion, and euthanasia.  As we share articles in our state paper, printed materials, videos, webpage and suggested readings, pray that God will use this work for His cause.

Euthanasia - The Right to Die

Once again in the mind-boggling arena of politics the ugly head of killing old and feeble people is on the agenda.  Exodus 23:7 states “Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not; for I will not justify the wicked.”

Euthanasia is, of course, morally and Biblically wrong.  As believers we should see to safeguard the God-given right to life, to which every individual is entitled.  According to the humanistic philosophy, your life is in danger if you are very old, mentally ill, or severely handicapped.  These individuals have God-given life and spiritual desires and should be treated with compassion, dignity and encouragement.  Proverbs 6:16-19...”The Lord hates...hands that shed innocent blood and a heart that devises wicked plans.”  Those who wish to destroy others because they are “no longer profitable” or “costly” are classified as “wicked.”

I.  Historical Aspects of Euthanasia

When Hitler of Germany issued his direct order for euthanasia of the Jews in 1939, all German state institutions were required to report patients who had been ill for at least five years or who were unable to work.  The decision of which patients lived or died was based entirely on a brief questionnaire.  The Nazi authorities that pronounced their death were professors of psychiatry at major universities in Germany.  The never even saw the individuals that they pronounced the death sentence upon.

The first to be killed in the 1940's, during the holocaust, and also in the Middle Ages, were the aged, the infirmed, the senile, the mentally retarded, and “defective” children.  The German Nazi power even went so far as to exterminate children with badly modeled ears, epileptic, and bed-wetters.

According to the News Service Publications, “The mass extermination of Germany’s undesirables started with the acceptance of the attitude basic to the euthanasia philosophy, that “there is such a thing as life not worthy to be lived.”  This is the attitude that is being widely debated and accepted today in the abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia  movement.

II.  Present Day Concept of Euthanasia

Euthanasia is not a mere fear for the future.  It has survived and is now present in the American Medical practice.  Even today doctors in the United States are debating whether it is better to starve “undesirables” to death or administer fatal injections.  “Voices in our government are looking for ways to reduce health care costs,” states Denyse Handlen in her book, Mercy Killing.

Well meaning people are attracted to what might seem to be the beneficial aspects of some form of euthanasia.  Americans must not be misled or tranquilized by assurances that this practice is limited to the “terminally ill.”  Abortion was once proposed as a last resort to desperate cases, but today is a commonplace procedure.  “To say that this subject can be carefully controlled is either naive or deceitful,” The Right To Live, The Right To Die - C. Everett Koop.

Former Governor Richard Land of Colorado shocked the nation in March, 1984, when he told a group of health lawyers that “sick people have a duty to die and get out of the way and let the well society build a reasonable life.”

III.  The Biblical Perspective of the Right To Life

I Corinthians 3:16-17 reminds us that our bodies are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in us.  That makes life very precious to God.  As the movement continues to gather momentum, euthanasia is moving into the spotlight as the great moral issue of the twenty-first century.  Turning to the Bible for answers is the only possible guideline.  The  “Dying with Dignity” movement is worldwide, and its membership is swelling.  The Hemlock Society is one of thirty seven organizations of the World Federation of Right to Die Societies in twenty three countries.

The Word encourages life for all ages: Psalms 8:2  - Babies;   Psalms 127:3-5   - Children; Matthew 5:21   - Adults.

Abortion 2008-2009

The subject of abortion has been one our major concern this year for the CAC and the MS Baptist churches.  I truly appreciate the tremendous response of the Mississippi BMA churches in our petition drive.  So many of you have telephoned or written to me about the efforts to “Amend the Mississippi State Constitution.”

This is Initiative Measure  #26 that requires the signed petitions to be validated by the local county clerk.  Thank you again, BMA folks for standing up for the rights of the unborn.

President Obama signaled to the nation the his proabortion stance when he appointed Deputy  Attorney General David Ogden.

Ogden’s own words give testimony to his, and President Obama’s, stance on the unborn.  Back in 1987, David Ogden co-authored a brief for the American Psychological Association arguing that “ parental notification was an unconstitutional burden on a 13 or 14 year old girl seeking an abortion.   There is no question that the right to secure an abortion is fundamental.”  (Hartigan vs. Zbaraz, 1987)

Just the Facts, Sir!

“Abortion Statistics for Mississippi.” can be found on the internet using the search engine, Google.    The numbers are startling  and should cause the Christians to pray much, much more.

Listed below are a few facts from the site:

1) “In 1997, there were 42,747 MS births,

2) Same year, 20.7% were to teenagers,

3) Same year, 45.5% were to unmarried mothers,

4) In 1997, 1,344 babies were aborted at 8 weeks,

5) Nationwide, 348,340 babies were aborted at 8 weeks, and
6) In 1997, 3,563 MS babies were aborted.”

The internet address,  www.abortionfacts.com  Has much valuable information.  The following quote is noted,  “abortion has slowly crept in to the world of religion and now entire denominations embrace abortions as an appropriate choice both in the eyes of God and their church leaders.  The decision to illegitimately claim God’s blessing on the act of abortion is both immoral and heretical.”

Psalms 139: 13-16 states,

“For thou has possessed my reins: thou has covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvellous are thy
works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret; and curiously
wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my
members were written, which in continuance, were fashioned, when as yet there
 was none of them.”

HAVE YOU SIGNED THE PETITION?

We hope that each church and pastor of the BMA of Mississippi has led out in the Petition to amend the Mississippi Constitution.  Initiative #26 would amend the Mississippi Constitution to define the word “person” or “persons” as those terms are used in Article III of the state constitution, to include every human being from the moment of fertilization.  Each Mississippi Church has been mailed a packet from the CAC office with instructions on how to circulate the petition and take the petition to the county clerk for certification of all signees.  This is a great way to express our voices against the evil act of abortions.  We need 90,000 signatures over the state in order for the petition to be presented to the state legislature.  BMA of Mississippi, let’s do our part.  Feel free to contact the CAC office, if you have any questions.

In the near future, our churches and pastors will be receiving a packet per US Mail.  It  is a petition to amend the Mississippi Constitution.  The petition involves the term “person.”
Below is a sample of the letter that will accompany the petition.

Dear Church, Pastor and Staff,

Would you please join the Christian Action Commission in this petition to amend the Mississippi Constitution concerning the term “person?”  This is one way to defeat the liberal abortionist of our day.

Please designate someone in your church to be the petition circulator for registered voters; then, have them take this to the county clerk’s office for certification.  Other instructions are included in the packet.

We can make a difference!

Sincerely,

Dr. John M. Adams

Joshua 24:15
“I Have Chosen”

This is a voters initiative to collect and certify approximately 90,000 signatures from registered voters.  We will join thousands of other believers.  Our agenda is to defeat the liberal abortionist and force the issue to be placed on the 2010 ballot for voters to decide.

Our nation was founded on the truth that all of life is sacred.  As “Personhood USA “ states, “ when abortion is permissible , the value of human life is diminished.”  Please feel free to go online to www.personhoodmississippi.com for more information.  This petition has received the endorsement of Lt. Governor Phil Bryant.  Let’s do this for the unborn!

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observation held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people to pray for the nation.  It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.  It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer.  The National Day of Prayer is based on our understanding that this country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible.

Our CAC trustees and Director encourage each Mississippi Church to make plans to participate in this special prayer day.  Here are some suggestions:

1) Announce the day via bulletin, church signs, mailouts, etc.

2) Have a National Prayer Day Committee or individual make preparations for this day.

3) Open your church building or fellowship hall all day for prayer by your congregation and community.

4) Arrange for prayer at the town or city hall, courthouse or flagpole in the AM or at the noon hour.

5) Pray specifically for: the nation, soldiers, President of the United States, Governor, Senators, Representatives, Mayor, Judges, Sheriff, Police Officers, Pastors, Teachers, Schools, Colleges, Missionaries, Associational Leaders, youth, and our church pulpits.

6) Pray for peace, for Jerusalem, for Israel and for our Lord to come.

7) Pray and pray some more - prayer is the need, not a social gatherings, not a meeting, but prayer where God meets with his people.

You may contact this site for additional information and resources: www.ndpf.org.

Director in Jackson
It was my privilege to visit the 2009 legislative sessions of the State House and the State Senate and discuss the moral issues that are before our state - gambling, abortion, and taxation on cigarettes.  I encouraged our representatives to cast their votes based on Biblical and moral convictions.  As I have led these sessions in opening prayer, it has caused me to recognize what  a great moral and financial battle these men and women are facing for our state.

You can find out more information by visiting the action alert page on this website.  Scroll down to the Mississippi Legislative Links and click on the State House or Senate Directory.  Feel free to email your Senator or Representative.  Your comments and concerns help to shape the opinions of your elected officials.  Reminder to always be respectful, courteous, and Christian-like in your comments.

Thoughts to correspond to your elected officials:
1.  Put God first in all deliberations,
2.  Do not be swayed by humanistic philosophy,
3.  Vote for protection of the elderly and unborn,
4.  Stand against gambling, sodomy, pornography and the evils they portray,

Abortion- the Legacy of Roe vs Wade.

The American Civil Liberties Union (A.C.L.U.) hailed the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 decision in Roe vs Wade as “an important step in the right direction.”  Everyone has an opinion about abortion.  It is God’s opinion that will be the final authority concerning this subject.  In the writings of Job, chapter 31, verses 14 and 15 it states, “what then shall I do when God riseth up? And when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?  Did not he that made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?”

The following contrasting of hundred (100) years is visible in the change of the American Medical Association’s (AMA) Policy Statements on Abortion.  This was the general opinion of the AMA just before Roe vs Wade of 1973:

The American Medical Association on Abortion: An anatomy of Contrasting Policy Statements:
When Does Human Life Begin?
1871 -“No other doctrine appears to be consonant with reason or physiology but that which admits the embryo to possess vitality from the very moment of conception”
The AMA abortion policy statements of 1967 and 1970 include no references to the scientific fact that human life begins at conception.
What is Abortion?
1859 - “The slaughter of countless children; such unwarrantable destruction of human life”
1871 - “The work of destruction; the wholesale destruction of unborn infants”
1967 - “The interruption of pregnancy; the induced termination of pregnancy.”
1970 - “A medical procedure”
What Should the Ethics of Abortion Be?
1871- “Thou shalt not kill.  This commandment is given to all without exception...it matters not at what stage of development his victim may have arrived.”
1967 - “This is a personal and moral consideration which in all cases must be faced according to the dictates of the conscience of the patient and her physician.”
Who Should Perform Abortions?
1871 - “It will be unlawful and unprofessional for any physician to induce abortion.”
1970 - “Abortion should be performed only by a duly licensed physician.”
Who Are Physician Abortionists?
1871 - “men who cling to a noble profession only to dishonor it; false brethren; educated assassins; modern Herods; the executioners.”
